The remains of two musical instruments, a tortoise carapace lyre and an ‘early type’<br>aulos, were found in a grave of the Classical period (470-50 BC), outside the Athenian walls, in the area between the so-called ‘Eriai’ Gates and the Dipylon. In this paper, they are discussed in every significant organological detail and are compared with similar finds; and an attempt is made to reconstruct them verbally. Of special mention are: the elegant string holder of the lyre and the affinity of the aulos to some other significant exemplars.
