It
is generally hypothesized that stereotypic behaviours result from disruption of coordinated
function within the basal ganglia (henceforth the ’Basal Ganglia (BG) Pathways Hypotheses’)
and/or between the cortex and basal ganglia (henceforth the ’Cortico-Striatal-Thalamo-Cortical
(CSTC) Circuits Hypotheses‘): ideas largely influenced by prominent theories of
normal basal ganglia function, drug-induced SBs, and
research on conditions like Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Obsessive
Compulsive Disorder, Tourette’s syndrome, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. The anatomy and function of the cortico-basal ganglia
systems that inform these hypotheses is described in this Supplementary Material.
