A male anuran aligns his cloaca near a female’s cloaca during mating in species
with axillary amplexus, like the wood frog, and a substantial size disparity could
misalign cloacae and impede the distribution of sperm over the clutch, thus reducing
fertilization rates. In addition, male wood
frogs use their hind legs to 'pull' the eggs from a female’s cloaca, and
the male pushes the emerging clutch against the female’s hind legs to shape it into
a ball.
